Obama Served On Board That Funded Pro-Palestinian Group
By:  Aaron Klein
Date Posted: February 27, 2008

JERUSALEM – Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama served as a paid director on the board of a nonprofit organization that granted funding to a controversial Arab group that mourns the establishment of Israel as a “catastrophe.” (Obama has also reportedly spoken at fundraisers for Palestinians living in what the United Nations terms refugee camps.)

The co-founder of the Arab group, Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, is a harsh critic of Israel who reportedly worked on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization when it was labeled a terror group by the State Department.

Khalidi held a fundraiser in 2000 for Obama’s failed bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In 2001, the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as a group helping the disadvantaged, provided a $40,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, at which Khalidi’s wife, Mona, serves as president. The Fund provided a second grant to AAAN for $35,000 in 2002.

Obama was a director of the Woods Fund board from 1999 to Dec. 11, 2002, according to the Fund’s website. According to tax filings, Obama received compensation of $6,000 per year for his service in 1999 and 2000.

The $40,000 grant from the Woods Fund to AAAN constituted about a fifth of the group’s reported grants for 2001, also according to tax filings. The $35,000 Woods Fund grant in 2002 made up about one-fifth of AAAN’s reported grants for that year as well.

Headquartered in the heart of Chicago’s Palestinian immigrant community, AAAN describes itself as working to “empower Chicago-area Arab immigrants and Arab Americans through the combined strategies of community organizing, advocacy, education and social services, leadership development, and forging productive relationships with other communities.”

Speakers at AAAN dinners and events routinely have taken an anti-Israel line. The group co-sponsored a Palestinian art exhibit, titled “The Subject of Palestine,” that featured works related to what Palestinians call the “nakba” or “catastrophe” of Israel’s founding in 1948.

The theme of AAAN’s Nakba art exhibit, held at DePaul University in 2005, was “the compelling and continuing tragedy of Palestinian life … under [Israeli] occupation … home demolition … statelessness … bereavement … martyrdom, and … the heroic struggle for life, for safety, and for freedom.”

Another AAAN initiative, “Al Nakba 1948 As Experienced by Chicago Palestinians,” seeks documents related to the “catastrophe” of Israel’s founding.

Although AAAN co-founder Rashid Khalidi has at times denied working directly for the PLO, he reportedly served as director of the official PLO press agency WAFA in Beirut from 1976 to 1982, a period during which the PLO committed scores of anti-Western attacks and was labeled by the U.S. as a terror group. Khalidi’s wife, Mona Khalidi, reportedly was WAFA’s English translator during that period.

Khalidi also advised the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid Conference in 1991. During documented speeches and public events, Khalidi has called Israel an “apartheid system in creation” and a “racist” state. Critics have accused him of excusing Palestinian terrorism, a charge he denies.

He dedicated his 1986 book, Under Siege, to “those who gave their lives … in defense of the cause of Palestine and independence of Lebanon.”

While the Woods Fund’s contribution to Khalidi’s AAAN might be perceived as a one-time contact with Obama, there is evidence of a deeper relationship between the presidential hopeful and Khalidi.

According to a professor at the University of Chicago who said he has known Obama for 12 years, the senator first befriended Khalidi when the two worked together at the university. The professor spoke on condition of anonymity. Khalidi lectured at the University of Chicago until 2003; Obama taught law there from 1993 until his election to the Senate in 2004.

Asked during a radio interview with this reporter on WABC’s John Batchelor program about his 2000 fundraiser for Obama, Khalidi said he “was just doing my duties as a Chicago resident to help my local politician.”

Khalidi said he supports Obama for president “because he is the only candidate who has expressed sympathy for the Palestinian cause.”

Khalidi also lauded Obama for “saying he supports talks with Iran. If the U.S. can talk with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, there is no reason it can’t talk with the Iranians.”

Concerning Obama’s role in funding AAAN, Khalidi claimed he “never heard of the Woods Fund until it popped up on a bunch of blogs a few months ago.” He terminated the interview when pressed further about his links with Obama.

Contacted by phone, Mona Khalidi refused to answer questions about AAAN’s involvement with Obama.

The Obama campaign did not reply to a list of questions sent by e-mail to the senator’s press office.

In addition to questions about his relationship with Khalidi, Obama may face increased scrutiny over his ties to William C. Ayers, a member of the Weather Underground terrorist group that sought to overthrow the U.S. government and took responsibility for a string of bombings in the early 1970’s.

Obama served on the Woods Fund board alongside Ayers (who is still on the board). Ayers, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has written about his involvement with the Weather Underground’s bombing of U.S. governmental buildings including the Capitol in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972.

Although charges against him were dropped in 1974 due to prosecutorial misconduct, Ayers told a newspaper reporter several years ago that he had no second thoughts about his violent past. “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough,” Ayers told The New York Times in an interview published, ironically, on Sept. 11, 2001.

In his memoir, Fugitive Days, Ayers wrote: “Everything was absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon” – though he continued with a disclaimer that he didn’t personally set the bombs but his group placed the explosives and planned the attack.

Besides serving with Obama on the board of the Woods Fund, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s senatorial campaign fund and has served on panels with Obama at several public speaking engagements.

  1. I have visited this site on many an occasion now but this post is the 1st one that I have ever commented on.

Congratulations on such a fine article and site I have found it very helpful and informative – I only wish that there were more out there like this one.

I never leave empty handed, sometimes I may even be a little disappointed that I may not agree with a post or reply that has been made. But hey! that is life and if every one agreed on the same thing what a boring old world we would live in.

Keep up the good work and cheers.

Fact Check on Obama and Ayers
Obama Turned Eight In August 1969, The Days Of Rage Occurred In October 1969. Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961. He turned eight on August 4, 1969. The Days of Rage, in which William Ayers participated, occurred in October 1969. [Obama Birth Certificate, UPI, 10/21/81]

William Ayers Participated In The “Days Of Rage” In 1969. The AP reported, “In the autumn of 1969, the Weatherman, led by Bernardine Dohrn and Mark Rudd, converged on Chicago and planned a series of demonstrations to dramatize their beliefs. The riots, which came to be known as the “Days of Rage,” caused thousands of dollars in damage in the downtown and Near North Side areas and resulted in injuries to several policemen. Rudd and Ms. Dohrn were named in federal riot indictments with ten others — William Ayers, Kathy Boudin, John Jacobs, Jeff Jones, Michael Spiegel, Howard Machtinger, Terry Robins, Lawrence Weiss, Linda Sue Evans and Judy Clark. Another prominent activist, Cathy Wilkerson, was arrested on state charges of mob action and resisting a police officer. Some surrendered years ago. Two — Ms. Dohrn and Ayers, son of the former chairman of Commonweath Edison Co. — surfaced Wednesday. Charges against Ayers had been dropped in 1978 but Ms. Dohrn still faces charges of aggravated battery and jumping bail.” [AP, 12/3/80]

Chicago Sun Times: Obama’s Connection To Ayers Is A “Phony Flap”. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote in an editorial, “But Ayers, it is also true to say, has since followed in the footsteps of the great Chicago social worker Jane Addams, crusading for education and juvenile justice reform. His 1997 book, A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court, has been praised for exposing how Cook County’s juvenile justice system all but eliminates a child’s chance for redemption. Is Barack Obama consorting with a radical? Hardly. Ayers is nothing more than an aging lefty with a foolish past who is doing good. And while, yes, Obama is friendly with Ayers, it appears to be only in the way of two community activists whose circles overlap. Obama’s middle name is Hussein. That doesn’t make him an Islamic terrorist. He stopped wearing a flag pin. That doesn’t make him unpatriotic. And he’s friendly with UIC Professor William Ayers. That doesn’t make him a bomb thrower. Time to move on to Phony Flap 6,537,204.” [Chicago Sun-Times, 3/3/08]

Washington Post: Obama-Ayers Link “Is A Tenuous One.” The Washington Post reported in a fact check, “But the Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one.” [Washington Post, 2/18/08]

Woods Fund President Harrington: “This Whole Connection Is A Stretch.” The Washington Post reported in a fact check, “Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia, and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and ‘passion for social justice.’ ‘This whole connection is a stretch,’ Harrington told me. ‘Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns.'” [Washington Post, 2/18/08]

Noam Scheiber Of TNR: “I Don’t See Evidence Of Any Relationship” Between Obama And Ayers. Noam Scheiber of The New Republic wrote, “Ben says Ayers and Obama were, at best, casual friends. Even that seems to overstate things, though. I don’t see evidence of any relationship. The only concrete connection we know of is the meeting, which was attended by a number of local liberals; their contemporaneous membership on the board of a local organization; and a $200-donation by Ayers to one of Obama’s state senate campaigns. (Obama also once praised something Ayers had written about the juvenile justice system.) I’m not saying they couldn’t have been casual friends; just that there isn’t much evidence for that at this point.” [The New Republic, 2/22/08]

Birdsell: Obama Links To Ayers Were “Pretty Slender Ties.” The New York Sun reported, “‘Those are pretty slender ties to a controversial figure,’ the dean of Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs, David Birdsell, said of Mr. Obama’s links to Mr. Ayers.” [New York Sun, 2/19/08]

RHETORIC: He was then asked about his association with William Ayers, a member of the Weather Underground, a radical group from the 1960s and ’70s. Ayers was quoted after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as saying he did not regret setting bombs and that “we didn’t do enough.” [Washington Post, 4/17/08]

On September 11, 2001, A Story About William Ayers’ Memoir Was Published In The New York Times; The Interview Occurred Prior To Publication. “‘I don’t regret setting bombs,’ Bill Ayers said. ‘I feel we didn’t do enough.’ Mr. Ayers, who spent the 1970’s as a fugitive in the Weather Underground, was sitting in the kitchen of his big turn-of-the-19th-century stone house in the Hyde Park district of Chicago.” [New York Times, 9/11/01]

Ayers Is A Professor Of Education At UIC. According to his website at UIC, “William Ayers is a school reform activist, Distinguished Professor of Education, and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he teaches courses in interpretive research, urban school change, and youth and the modern predicament. He is the founder of the Center for Youth and Society and founder and co-director of the Small Schools Workshop. A graduate of the Bank Street College of Education and Teachers College, Columbia University, he has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education. His interests focus on the political and cultural contexts of schooling as well as the meaning and ethical purposes of teachers, students, and families.” [Ayers UIC Site, Ayers Personal Site, Accessed 5/31/07]

Ayers Advised Chicago Mayor Richard Daley On School Reform Issues. Bill “Ayers is now mainstream — an educator with distinguished professor status. He has written three books about education and has advised Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley on the subject of school reform.” [AP, 10/14/01]

Terkel: Ayers Is A “Sensitive And Gifted” Writer And Teacher. Studs Terkel wrote, “William Ayers is as sensitive and gifted a chronicler as he is a teacher.” [Beacon]

1979: Charges Against Ayers Were Dropped Because “The Government’s Case Was Based On Illegal Wiretaps.” The New York Times reported, “William Ayers was a fugitive, too, for nine of those years, but the Federal charges against him, Miss Dohrn and other members of the revolutionary organization were dropped in 1979, when it was ruled that the Government’s case was based on illegal wiretaps.” [New York Times, 12/5/80]

Ayers “Served No Time.” “William Ayers: Surrendered and pleaded guilty in 1980 to possession of explosives and served no time. Teaches early childhood development at the University of Illinois.” [Boston Globe, 9/19/93]

Wow, that is a really feeble attempt to diffuse the William Ayers connection.
    Please see:

It doesn’t matter how much older Ayers is compared to Obama! I didn’t say that Obama was part of the Weather Underground in any of my posts.

Those newspapers are full of it and the New Republic (and NY Times) has absolutely no weight with me.
The fact of the matter is that the Obama campaign admitted that Obama and Ayers have been friends. This friendship began back in 1995. This is someone he paid homage to in the liberal Chicago political circles.

It doesn’t matter when Ayers gave the interview to the NY Times when he claims he should have bombed more US govt. target! It is ironic that it came out on 9/11, but the timing is not the issue. It is the content of what he said!

LOL, yeah, great, quote Ayers own site. I’m sure why can believe whatever the unrepentant terrorist says. What a sanitized explanation of his interests and pursuits.

“Mainstream,” HA! Yeah, I mean, everybody blew up govt. buildings back in the 60s and now refuse to apologize. What crap. I don’t give a hoot who he’s advised. I could care less about Daley.

Do you read your own posts? Your own citations show that the charges were dropped and Ayers served no time based on a technicality! He is guilty as sin. He didn’t become a free man because he was acquitted of any charges based on the evidence. We wiretap the mob and terrorists; I have no idea why the wiretap against him should have been illegal at the time.

  5. Brilliant!

According to a very well-researched article in the current American Thinker online, William Ayers ghost-wrote the book Barack Obama calls a memoir “Dreams of My Father” and probably also ghost-wrote his second book “Audacity of Hope”. I encourage anyone interested to check it out. William Ayers’ father Thomas, former CEO of Com Ed, was very close friends with Donald Warden, aka Khalid AlMansour, the founder of the Black Nationalist movement & Black Panther Party. Hew is also partners with the Saudi sheik that tried to blame 9/11 on the US & Giuliani gave him back his $10 million check. Khalid AlMansour, according to NY community organizer Percy Sutton, was RAISING MONEY for Obama’s tuition & trying to get him into Harvard. Barack Obama by his count was at 500 sermons of Rev. Wright, who preaches Black Liberation Theology. Google that, why don’t you? It’s pretty scary that Obama might actually get elected. The only reason I can think of is that the media is REFUSING to investigate this man, for whatever reason. But 30 reporters went traipsing to Alaska to cover a pregnant teenager and an old DUI. Fascinating!

  9. Abu Nudnik said

searchn: It doesn’t matter how many newspapers you quote. Ayers’ relationship with Obama appears to have begun in 1995, when Obama was not 8 years old. Obama was picked BY AYERS for the Chicago Annenberg Challenge to fund communist propaganda that couldn’t get in the front door of the public school system. Obama, from saying “he’s just a guy in the neighborhood” went on to say “he did that stuff when I was eight years old” to “I assumed he had rehabilitated himself by the time I knew him,” proving that he knew what he was. If he didn’t, how could he assume he had been rehabilitated? Rehabilitated from what? Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn held Obama’s political coming-out event for his run for state senator. Ayers’ deep hatred for America continues in his “educational” activities (he is on record as saying that his bombings were supposed to be “educational” “consciousness raising” exercises.

And the relationship is probably deeper. I don’t know much about who wrote the school courses that were funded by the CAC but I’m sure if some reporter were to follow the money, they’d find communists (Ayers admits he’s a communist) writing curriculum which they then stuffed into unsuspecting and trusting young minds. Yes, Mr. Ayers, “Education is revolution.”

Obama’s past from high school throughout his university years is a complete blank. No record of any grades, essays…. How did a guy who never wrote a thing about law, had nothing published, become the editor of the Harvard Law Review, a publication that always has someone with a distinguished publication record in that job? What is he hiding?

All I can do is guess. It’s a strong socialist leaning which he’s hiding. But the media is uninterested. Why? Vanity. The newsman dreams of reporting the BIG STORY, the grand-slam of journalism and, long ago they decided the story was “America elects first black President.” That’s what this is about. They feel that they would be important people by being part of an important “historical event.” “Obviously, his election would be transformational and historical.” In what way? Because he’s black?

If Obama weren’t black, his numbers, considering his voting record would be down 15 points!

Thank you so very much for printing concerns I have in electing this man who has his own political agenda.
If elected, for sure an escalated war in the Middle East will happen. It is my opinion that this is the International Crisis Biden predicted. And since Obama is an anti-semite & pro-PLO, the entire region may go up in smoke as we just sit on our side of the world and let Isreal fend for themselves.

In addition, the Democrats will have the trifecta, both houses and the presidency. There will be no balance of power which has always kept our country strong.

Why do people equate this financial crisis with the Republicans, when in fact the Democrats were voted in 2 years ago to power, and were the ones who failed to act on this housing delimma. Not to mention they are the ones favoring these sub-prime loans to people who could not afford them. So why would we put the Democtrats in total control of our country?

Obama had never been to the western hemisphere until 2 weeks before the DNC convention. How can he be an authority on world affairs? PLEASE PEOPLE ….WISEN UP AND BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN DEMOCRACY. AND BARRACK OBAMA IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM……….Germany believed in Adolph Hitler, he is known as a great orator…sound familiar? You are all being fooled.

Please vote for a man with a lifetime of experience both domestic and international. Someone whose life is an open book, no hidden secrets. Plese keep our country safe from THOSE WHO ARE JUST WAITING FOR OUR WEAKEST MOMENT to attack again. Do not elect a man who befriends terrorist because their theories are interesting. Hitler was interesting too in a sick sort of way….

    Emblematic of the McCain campaign:

McCain tried to smear Obama re Palestinian Khalidi….
While McCain was serving as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.
A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman, yet now McCain wants to smear Obama with a relationship with the same guy.

I believe that is called hoisting one upon their own petard.

To Jane, The connection you made with McCain/Khalidi is a bold face lie. Where did you drum that stuff up? There is ABSOLUTELY no connection to Khalidi and McCain at all. Show me where you found that BS.

How funny! For months, I have been observing the Obamabot trolls search the internet looking for these types of articles to bury under a web crawler and/or post shrill talking points stuff like; “Obama was 8 when a particular domestic terrorist was being bad, now he’s just a guy in the neighborhood…” yes, that will wash, sure, I certainly am okay with that answer. NAWWW sorry I don’t buy it…

Then, some republican “group” allots a block grant of money and THAT becomes as germane as a terrorist organizations leader, one who openly wants us dead, I should add, lauding and openly endorsing their dear “Prince O”? I blew iced tea out of my nose when I saw it could incite a word like “petard”.

Well, when you are done chilling your champagne; drink it down slowly and with much remorse. We, who made up our minds, based on many facts, to vote for McCain are not going away any time soon! Sorry, win or lose you should be ever thankful for us. For you, I sincerely hope the empty box (Prince-O) will make all your dreams come true even if he loses.

I would love to see him (Prince-O) lose just to watch Chris Matthews and Whoopi Goldberg cry. By the way, feel free to keep blaming all capitalists for the lack of petards in the financial world: Keep giving “Bawney Fwank” a free pass for his part in the economic troubles too! Please, put on your rose colored glasses and do it well into the next century, you should live so long… “Petard”… hahahahaha, M-80, hahahahahaha, okay I’m done.

Its amazing what people will repeat without researching the issue themselves. John McCain’s ties with Khalidi are much stronger. As Jane rightly points out, under McCain’s leadership, the IRI donated half a million dollars to Khalidi. Unbelievable.

I don’t know if there’s anything on that tape or not. I do know that we have a RIGHT to find out. Since the LA Times refuses to release it, we have little option but to force them to do so.

If you live in LA or subscribe to the LA Times, I strongly encourage you to:

a.) Cancel you subscription — TODAY!
b.) Make sure the newspaper knows why you cancelled.
c.) Grab a copy of the paper and make sure that their advertisers, especially the big ones, know that you’ve cancelled and why.
d.) Make sure the newspaper knows you’re talking to their advertisers.
e.) If you can spare some time, picket/protest the LA Times offices.
f.) Encourage your friends, neighbors, coworkers, family, etc. to do the same.
g.) Copy this message to every BLOG you visit.

If we hit them hard enough on their bottom line, they WILL release the tape.

    Re:McCain’s supposed donation to Khalidi

    Found this on http://www.worldnetdaily:

“The website documented how in the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several documented grants, including one worth about half a million dollars, to the Center for Palestine Research and Studies, or CPRS, a West Bank organization associated with Khalidi.

Unreported by the Huffington Post is that the CPRS, with which Khalidi was for a time moderately involved, is pro-Western and can be characterized as pro-Israel.

Its work has been condemned by the Palestinian leadership and by local terror groups as “Zionist propaganda.”

In contrast, the Khalidi organization Obama helped fund as a board member for a nonprofit, alongside domestic terrorist William Ayers, has taken a flagrantly anti-Israel line. Khalidi’s Arab American Action Network has hosted scores of Israel-bashing events, including at least one reportedly attended by Obama.”

Khalidi was instrumental in bringing Ahmadinajab to Columbia University; and was once the mouthpiece for the PLO. Ayers is an avowed communist. Jeremiah Wright spews hatred for America. Bernadine Dohern was once the “Most wanted woman in America.” How can we possibly consider someone who associates with these people for the office of President of the U.S ?
