Michelle Obama’s Racial Mindset/World-view

Posted by Tony Listi on February 28, 2008

The Obamas world-view is  still dominated by race, no matter how they are campaigning. The whole “unity” jibber-jabber seems like a sham, a means to an end.

Michelle Obama thesis was on racial divide

Michelle Obama’s senior year thesis at Princeton University, obtained from the campaign by Politico, shows a document written by a young woman grappling with a society in which a black Princeton alumnus might only be allowed to remain on the periphery.” Read the full thesis here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4. Michelle Obama

“My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my ‘blackness’ than ever before,” the future Mrs. Obama wrote in her thesis introduction. “I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don’t belong. Regardless of the circumstances underwhich I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second.”

The thesis, titled “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community” and written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, in 1985, has been the subject of much conjecture on the blogosphere and elsewhere in recent weeks, as it has been “temporarily withdrawn” from Princeton’s library until after this year’s presidential election in November. Some of the material has been written about previously, however, including a story last year in the Newark Star Ledger.

Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her “further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.”

During a presidential contest in which the term “transparency” has been frequently bandied about, candidates have buried a number of potentially revealing documents and papers. In Hillary Rodham Clinton’s case, there’s been a clamoring for tax records, White House memos and other material the candidate’s team has chosen to keep from release. The 96-page Princeton thesis, restricted from release by the school’s Mudd Library, has also been the subject of recent scrutiny.

Earlier this week, commentator Jonah Goldberg remarked on National Review Online, “A reader in the know informs me that Michelle Obama’s thesis … is unavailable until Nov. 5, 2008, at the Princeton library. I wonder why.”

“Why a restricted thesis?” asked blogger-pastor Louis Lapides on his site Thinking Outside the Blog. “Is the concern based on what’s in the thesis? Will Michelle Obama appear to be too black for white America or not black enough for black America?”

  1. I was correctly quoted in the article about the content of Michelle Obama’s thesis, “Is the concern based on what’s in the thesis? Will Michelle Obama appear to be too black for white America or not black enough for black America?” Now I am especially concerned for both Michelle and her husband. I’m not convinced Barak is “his own man.” When Hillary pressed him to denounce Louis Farrakhan during this week’s Democratic debate, Barak distanced himself from Farrakhan’s antisemitic comments but was not as quick to reject Farrakhan’s support. Clinton pressed him some more and he finally said, “If it makes you more comfortable, I’ll reject his support.” Wow! What was that? Doesn’t he have his own moral fiber to know Minister Farrakhan is an avowed racist, anti-semite and a conspiratorial black nationalist extremist. Is Barak afraid the Black community will not accept him because he’s rejecting Farrakhan? Is he afraid of the white community rejecting his bid for the presidency so he gave in and disavowed Farrakhan? This was the same concernI had regarding Michelle’s thesis. The Obama’s want to be “white” to the whites and “black” to the blacks. But who are they? Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen said it best: Barak Obama is a fog of a man.

Obama is between a rock and a hard place. I’m not sure if his campaign is uniting America racially speaking, or dividing it further. I think his Presidency, should that happen, probably will work to unite the country in some small way. I don’t think Obama himself has a lot of influence on any of this. He is like a leaf blown by the wind.
Obama stumbled over the issue of Farrakhan and Farrakhan’s support. However I don’t think too many white voters know who the hell Louis Farrakhan is. I think most black voters do know who he is but probably view him, and his “support” as irrelevant.
Anyway, to me the “Farrakhan issue” was an interesting moment and a kind of microcasm in American race problems, but looking at the Presidentual election, it is pretty much a non-issue.

  4. I agree with Galileo Smith (cool name) that most of white America hasn’t the faintest idea who is world is Louis Farrakhan and why is everyone so concerned about him. Well, that’s not reason for white America taking the time to learn who Minister Farrkhan is and what his beliefs are. During the 90s I did a research paper on antisemitism in modern day evangelical Christianity. I also dabbled in the teachings in the Nation of Islam, Farrakhan’s group. On the news today you’ll hear a few snippets from the Minister calling Judaism a “gutter religion”. That’s nothing compared his beliefs about black supremacy. He calls whites “blue eyed devils.” Do some research on Farrakhan’s beliefs. He is a black David Duke. He’s a reversed KKK and Barak Obama better stand as far away from Farrkhan, aka Calypso Gene, if he wants to convince the America public he’s got the guts to be president of this great country.

Blackness means to me crime, substandard English, poor scholarship, unwed mothers, under employment, unemployment, and prison. Blacks who assimilate into the white culture are more than accepted. The world is their oyster. They have reverse discrimination advantages. They could run for president of the United States under some circumstances. I do not understand why Obama embraces blackness when he represents the standard of excellence in white culture. A man of his stature should tell the black community to lighten up. Get educated. Get married. Learn to speak English. Get a job and be happy.

To kgb: You stated “I do not understand why Obama embraces blackness when he represents the standard of excellence in white culture.(?)”

Let’s start with the fact your sentence should have ended with a ? instead of a period. Next, to answer your question, if Obama was the average “black” man on the street and you had no knowledge of who he was, you and the rest of “White” America ,would call him Nigger as quickly as I’m sure you spout it out now. Whether you like it or not, he is “black”, and he should embrace his blackness, as those of us who are black do.

It is people like you who utterly discuss me and pray for day you and your kind fall off of the face of this earth.

To be precise, Obama is only half black racially. His mom was white.

Ldb, unless you know Kgb personally, I think it is a bit uncharitable to assume that Ldb would call a black man, who he did not know, the N word.

What does it mean to “embrace blackness”? That just seems absurd to me. The color of people’s skins is determined by some obscure protein called melanin that no one has control over. Colors have no deep meaning. Merely different wavelengths of visible light.

But there is a certain type of culture that is more common among blacks than whites. I will call it ghetto culture, which is a liberal culture. It generally embraces degrading music (rap) and expensive jewelry (bling). It does not place a very high value on working hard in school to get an education and develop marketable skills or on having sex only within marriage (70% out of wedlock birth rate among blacks). It demands government enforced inequality in the form of special privileges (affirmative action) to protect it from the false spectre of discrimination. It embraces socialism rather than capitalism. It embraces victimism rather than true empowerment through reliance on oneself, one’s family, and one’s community.
This destructive and counterproductive culture holds black people back, not discrimination. And it would seem that only blacks will be able to get rid of these cultural pathologies since whites’ criticism of ghetto culture is dogmatically and impulsively dismissed as racism. But where are the black leaders who will demand cultural excellence of the black community?

I am trying to get my head around this. Being married to the front runner for the Democrat nomination for President, is Michelle Obama’s idea of living in a country were she will never be a full participant?

Doesn’t the very fact that Obama is were he is in a this campaign suggest that America is in fact, not the racist evil empire that so many suggest? What ever will these people do should Obama be elected President?

How can people claim that they do not get ahead, that they are discriminated agianst in education or discrimated agianst in the work place due to racism, if the president of the United state were a Harvard educated, former Harvard News paper editor, pubished author, wealthy Lawyer and also black?

If Barack Obama were to be elected President, it seems he would be pulling the rug out from under people like Al Sharpton! Maybe this is whay Al Sharpton has already had to step forward and say Obama is not black enough! He has to ensure that no one actually thinks a black man could become the President of this evil, racist country!

On Barack Obama and “blackness”. Why did he embrace his black heritage? He said that he wants to bridge the gap between black and white, so why then only embrace half of his background? If he did want to bridge this divide, shouldn’t he have embraced his multicultural heritage?

He could have claimed to be both black and white. But he chose on side of his heritage, then proceeds to tell us he is all about both sides!

Something seems rather odd to me about that!

    • leila said

Why did Obama embrace his black heritage? Are you serious? Heather, you are sooooooooo white. I mean sooooooooooooo white!!! Only a white person could ask that question. He embraced his “blackness” (WHATEVER THE HELL THAT MEANS), because white people looked at him and called him black. That’s what white people see when they look at Obama. Do you really think that anyone would call him “the white guy” when referring to him? Btw. I don’t really hear Obama talking about his “heritage” a lot.

Here is my thing. I am white. I am not ignorant. Ignorance is alive and it infects every race and background. One of the life lessons that I have learned is that stupid and nasty people come in all shapes and colors.

I am simply astounded by the discussions about race that people have these days just because we happen to have a black president. Guys, get over it already! Let’s focus more on policies and less on skin color.

Undermining the credibility and legitimacy of ppl like Sharpton will be the only good that will come of an Obama presidency.

Obama is not a black man – he is biracial. His skin color is only dark because his father’s genes were the dominant ones and that happens in most biracial marriages. Why doesn’t he embrace his white heritage as well as his black heritage – they are equal. By not doing so, he only serves to further divide the races, and he is supposed to be a uniter – DUH!!!

Why did Michelle Obama skip the Al Smith dinner (a major Catholic Charities fundraiser) in New York City two days ago? Is she mad at her husband (rumors abound about The One having an affair with a 33 year old, now banished to Martinique, which the MSM is keeping hidden)? Michelle certainly was in NYC and evidently after a lobster, Iranian caviar, and champagne dinner at the Waldorf Astoria (probably paid with campaign money), she went to a rock concert fundraiser while her husband gave his talk at the Al Smith dinner. Is this Michelle’s way of showing disdain for Catholics and their unbending stance on protecting life? Surely she must agree with her husband’s vote for infanticide after a failed abortion. I cannot understand how any true Catholic can in good conscience vote for Obama.

Michelle also was absent at the 9-11 ceremony; again Obama looked awkward without his wife, since Cindy McCain accompanied her husband to that ceremony as well.

I cannot imagine Michelle Obama representing the United States as
the first lady. Heaven help us if Obama is elected.
